Residence, citizenship and tax residence
Residence is permission to stay under a migration category. Transitoria is short-term/specific; temporaria and permanente have different conditions and DNI outcomes. Citizenship is a separate legal status; tax residence is a separate tax question.
Precaria is provisional permission connected to a pending process. It is not the final residence decision. Read the permission and follow-up instructions actually issued in your case.
DNI means Documento Nacional de Identidad. A foreigner’s current temporary or permanent residence can enable a DNI; transitory residence does not. Follow RENAPER/Migraciones instructions for your actual process.
CUIL identifies employment/social-security records through ANSES. CUIT is the tax identifier through ARCA. CDI is an identification path for certain operations when CUIT/CUIL is absent; it is not a tax registration.
Do not request every identifier by default. Check existing records and the purpose of the operation. A provisional foreigner record may need unification or replacement after DNI.
General RaDEX residence filing requires you to be inside Argentina. TIE24H electronic entry permission requires you to be outside. The system name does not promise a 24-hour approval.
TAD means Trámites a Distancia, a separate government digital-procedure platform used for procedures such as CABA SAS registration. Use the portal linked by the specific official procedure.
SMVM means Salario Mínimo Vital y Móvil, the changing minimum-wage reference used in some residence income requirements. UMSM is the migration-fee unit. They are different units.
Get the current value and the exact applicable procedure. This guide does not convert a salary threshold into a fixed US-dollar requirement or promise an all-in filing price.
Argentina's migration authority distinguishes transitory, temporary, and permanent residence. Its current guidance says transitory residence does not enable a DNI, while temporary and permanent residence enable the corresponding DNI.

Change note: Official source rechecked on 2026-10-03; the bounded statement remains supported. Rechecked against the current source on 2026-08-17; no material source change was identified.
Applies when: People comparing Argentine migration categories and identity-document consequences.
What remains uncertain: A category name alone does not establish individual eligibility or guarantee approval.
Get case-specific review when: Eligibility depends on disputed status, family ties, prior overstay, work authorization, or a deadline.
A foreigner's DNI requires current temporary or permanent residence. Transitory residence does not qualify. If the residence is absent, expired, or expires within 60 days, RENAPER directs the applicant to Migraciones first.

CUIL identifies employment and social-security records. ANSES describes a provisional CUIL for foreign employees after the necessary migration steps, then unification after the Argentine DNI. Self-employed/monotributo registration uses CUIT through ARCA. ANSES says not to request CUIL if you already have CUIT.

CUIT y CDI — Extranjeros residentes en el país sin DNI argentino
ARCA has a special CUIT process for foreign residents without an Argentine DNI, requiring identity and current migration-file evidence. A provisional CUIT's validity is limited. After obtaining the DNI, ARCA requires replacement and record association within 10 administrative working days.

CDI is available for people without CUIT or CUIL who need identification for banking, financial operations, or registrable assets. Documentation differs between resident and nonresident foreigners. It does not replace fiscal or social-security registration.
